The Great Escape

We have certainly started 2022 with a bang! The short candidate market that we have been experiencing has extended into this year, all while many organisations are struggling to meet demand and growth expectations.

Johnson Recruitment believes that there are a number of factors contributing to this as a direct result of the pandemic:

  • Uncertainty is still high so candidates are staying put.
  • ‘The Great Holiday’ – many candidates are taking an extended break rather than taking up a new position.
  • Zero international travel (for now) and very limited interstate transfers, so not only are we not getting new candidates in, we are not creating new vacancies and candidate flow through people leaving the country, or moving interstate.

We have also encountered an important fourth reason:

  • ‘The Great Escape’ – candidates are reluctant to accept roles that require commuting to the CBD or inner suburbs, leaving many vacancies unfilled. As a result, they are far more open to considering opportunities in regional Australia or at the very least, well out of metropolitan Melbourne.

Johnson Recruitment is attracting more high calibre candidates who are seeking non-metro roles than ever before. With over 20 successful placements in the last three months across regional areas, nationally, there is a real trend of a breadth of professionals seeking greener pastures.
