Black Dog Institute is a proudly independent not-for-profit medical research institute affiliated with UNSW Sydney. Established approximately 35 years ago and originally named the ‘Mood Disorders Unit’ located in the Prince Henry Hospital, Black Dog Institute is the only medical research institute in Australia dedicated to the investigation of mental health across the whole of life. Nationally recognised and respected, Black Dog Institute’s aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone.
Black Dog Institute works within the five portfolios of:
- Discovery
- Innovation
- Knowledge Translation
- Fundraising & Development
- Corporate Services
The five portfolios bring their rapid ‘translational’ model to life through integrating research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections and create real-world change. Partnerships with people with lived experience, federal, state and local governments, communities, schools, corporate Australia and others in the mental health sector enables Black Dog Institute to drive evidence-informed change in mental health where it’s needed most.
Sitting within the portfolio of Knowledge Translation is Clinical Services where patients, through an appointment at one of the clinics, access the highest levels of healthcare that is based on scientific and clinical evidence as well as lived experience.
