8 Refreshers for Healthy Choices in Lockdown

Many of us have enjoyed the perks of a hybrid working model, both working from home and in the office, over recent months, and at some progressive firms, years. However, working from home during a lockdown can remove some of the pleasures of remote working so here are some suggestions to help ensure you stay productive, happy and healthy.

By no means is this list exhaustive, and I am sure we all have different ways of getting through the days, but I hope you can find something in here for you.

1. Start the day with exercise

I can only speak for myself but starting the day with a run or a YouTube workout, sets my day with energy and a good intention. Whilst rolling out of bed straight to the desk was novel in the early stages, engaging in routined exercise followed by a shower and getting dressed into ‘non-pyjamas’ helps me get into work mode.

2. Create a to-do list

Create a daily to-do list with short-term objectives and make yourself accountable for meeting each deadline. The sooner you tick off something on your to-do list, the sooner you feel like you have achieved something which creates momentum throughout the day.

3. Routined breaks

Incorporating routined breaks into your workday will help increase productivity and boost energy levels. Taking breaks provides the opportunity to review your daily goals, as well as being able to stretch and get away from your desk. A sense of accomplishment in your private life can help productivity in your working life, even if this is just a chore such as putting clothes in the washing machine.

4. Treat yourself!

Maybe this one is just for me, but treating yourself can sometimes help you stay healthier. My water intake is very low at the best of times, but ever since I bought a SodaKing I find drinking litres of sparkling water a day very manageable.

5. Regular communication with colleagues

Maintain regular communication and check in, ask questions and share any positive news stories. Human connection is more important than ever during lockdown and the power of chatting to someone can not be underestimated – it can help you be more productive and lift your mental health. The more you communicate with colleagues, the more connected the team will feel.

6. Try not to get distracted

By now I am sure we all have an area that is designated exclusively for work. It doesn’t have to be a formal desk but it should be away from anything that might distract you.

7. Walk, walk, walk!

Living near the CBD, fortunately I have a lot of nice walking tracks within my 5km radius like the Botanical Gardens, Albert Park Lake and the beach. Going on a walk without my phone is the biggest change I have made this lockdown and I highly recommend. It is a great way to switch off from the day and get some exercise. If you inadvertently come back via a shop with some treats then you won’t feel as guilty…

8. Have something to look forward to at the end of the day

Make time for yourself and those you live with by dedicating time to switch off from work. Although your work and life is presently in the confines of your home, it is still crucial to set clear boundaries in your professional and personal life in order to create a sense of balance. Have something to look forward to at the end of day like a new TV series to start, or making a nice meal.
